Activities - A Happening Place
A Home for Many
Scarboro is a home and shelter for many groups seeking a comfortable and community-oriented place to carry out their activities/wishes/dreams. A full list of current and on-going activities can be found on the Events. Listed below are specific on-going activities.
Worship
Sunday Worship
Regular Sunday worship services are held at 10:30 a.m. During the months of July and August, worship services may be scheduled differently. Call the church office at 403-244-1161 for details.
Drop in early for coffee and stay for a social time after the service.
Choirs
Scarboro Church Choir is directed by Music Director Liz Paynter and is open to all. Rehearsals are held every Thursday from 8 - 10 p.m., and immediately prior to worship service on Sunday mornings.
Scarboro Jazz Choir, directed by Liz Paynter, is open to all. Rehearsals are 6:30 to 8 on Thursdays.
Education, Debate, and Discussion
Bible Study/ Spiritual Discovery
Downtown Study Group
Lunchtime Bible study offered for Scarboro members -- and open to all. Held at Knox United Church on Tuesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Contact Paul Mullen or Clint Mooney.
Thursday Morning Study Group
Held every Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Exploring the Faith Sessions
Offered primarily for those contemplating church membership -- but open to all. Contact the church office.
Lent Series
A focus for discussion, reflection, and learning, held on the six Sundays leading up to Easter.
Programs for Children and Youth
Nursery
A parent-run nursery operates every Sunday during the worship service. Contact Erika Olsvik-Andrews.
Sunday School
The "Seasons of the Spirit" Curriculum is presented to children from age 3 up to Grade 6. Contact Erika Olsvik-Andrews.
Junior Youth Group
A Youth Group operates for those in Grade 7 to 12. Contact Wendell Koning.
Care
Fellowship Activities
Please feel free to drop in before the Sunday service to socialize over coffee in the Sanctuary. The worship service is followed by a fellowship/visiting time in the Social Room over tea or coffee, with juice and cookies for the children.
Annual events such as Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinners, the Fall Supper, Christmas Turkey burgers, the Congregational Picnic, and the Golf Tournament are organized by various groups within the church.
Fellowship lunches are held periodically after Sunday worship. Contact the church office.
There is a monthly fellowship potluck dinner, the fourth Friday of Sept., Oct., Nov. March, April, May & June.
Women's Groups
These groups are not officially affiliated with the UCW but share similar goals of friendship and service:
Group #4 No regular meetings scheduled but sandwiches are made every 3 months for the Drop In Centre.
Seniors' Programs
The Westside Singers choir is directed by Susan Woodward.
Social Justice and Outreach
We liaise, contributing time and funds to such agencies as Calgary Drop-In Centre, Project Ploughshares, Habitat for Humanity, Inn From the Cold, Interfaith Food Bank, CUPS, Meals on Wheels, an AIDS hospice, CARZ Zambia Project, Adopt-a-Family Project at Christmas and provide emergency assistance to local family service agencies throughout the year. Also, in addition to supporting of the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada:
Volunteer Activities at Connaught School, Calgary
This school offers many opportunities to assist children in need including participating in the Partners in Literacy Program.
Supporting Cause Canada
Projects in developing countries: In spring of 2011 we began sponsoring an Empowerment Program for Women in Guatemala. Our funds will be matched 3 times by CIDA.
